How can we get there?
To this place of loving ourselves, it is a challenge in itself, we all know how important it is. But we don’t all know how to get there. Looking at ourselves like we look at a lover, maybe at our highest point of self love we look in the mirror and we see the person we love, the person we love the most. How do you feel when you look at the person you love the most? How would you feel if you looked at them and knew they would always be with you? In fact they cannot leave you, because it’s YOU. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could look at yourself the way you look at that lover? With love in your eyes? It can be hard though–especially when we prefer the opposite sex, we may notice that our characteristics are the opposite of what we like in a lover. Perhaps your hair and skin and musculature is not what you look for in a partner. If you like women and you are a man, it can be hard to look in the mirror and see your lover (especially as men are so visual).
But there are many types of love
Perhaps you love yourself as you love a friend or family member. Perhaps you love yourself as you love a member of the human race–this love that you have for all people. Plus the person that is closest to you, which is YOU! Perhaps it’s time to see beyond yourself, see beyond your looks, and see that you are much more than that. After all, you are attracted to people for things beyond their looks (whether you realize it or not). You find yourself attracted to a certain someone that gets you going, even if there is someone else that could be in your sights that looks much better. They may not be quite as good looking but they really get you going–perhaps it’s their voice, their persona, their brains. Maybe it’s the way they dominate you, or the way they submit to You. Maybe it’s the way they comfort you when you need it most. All of these things make this person appear much more attractive to you. This is the human way. I know we can get mixed up sometimes, focused on our looks, but you know that you are attracted to people for things far far beyond that.
How can I love myself?
Maybe you’d like to look at yourself, or feel yourself, give yourself a hug and say I love you.
That may be enough to show yourself some love. But not everyone is at that level, and that’s just fine in fact, you’ll find that most people you meet are simply not at that level, so it’s okay if you’re not there, either. Another way to show love to yourself is to ask “what would someone who loves themself do?” then intuitively taking that action, whatever it may be. You may find that there are things you should be doing when you answer that question, but you don’t feel like doing it. This means that you are not at that level of loving yourself, and that’s fine, you can do something to advance to another level.
Maybe today someone who loves themselves would go back to work, or go for a walk after eating their meal. And you know this,–you’ve asked yourself what some who loves themself would do. And still you prefer to simply lay on the couch. Maybe you choose to ignore life, to watch tv, watch pornography, scroll through your phone, or anything similar to that.
The first way you can love yourself at this point is to forgive yourself completely for not being perfect.
Because no one is, and if you truly loved your partner you would allow them to be as they are, you would forgive them, you would let them be imperfect, because you love them for other qualities. And you love them for being another human being, just like you.
You can love yourself by seeing your feelings, honoring your feelings, and responding to them.
Perhaps today you feel guilt, and shame, and a self loving thing to do would be to accept it, and to let yourself know that you are not a bad person and we all make mistakes.
You can love yourself by making your happiness and how you feel the number one priority in your life.
So that in every moment the only thing that matters is how you feel–just imagine doing that for your partner… How good would that make them feel? To put their feelings first, to care about them. One could imagine that feels quite good for them, and you can also imagine that they would like you very much because of that. How about if someone cared about your happiness and feelings that much? Give yourself that feeling. Let YOU be the number one priority in your life, let your feelings be the number one priority
You can love yourself by remembering that only you can truly make yourself happy.
You know all the little secrets and details that make you feel good. No one is a lover quite like you. You know your favorite spots to be touched. You know all your favorite foods, your favorite movies and dance moves.
Admit to your desires and why you want them.
Recognize that it’s your right to want the things you want. Let yourself go in the direction of your bliss, no matter how crazy or risky it seems. It’s what you want. Follow your desires and get what you really want. If your desire leads to no harm for anyone else on this Earth, never let anyone else judge you!
Make your feeling of safety your number one priority.
Your feeling of safety is the only thing that matters–no matter what is going on, what is pressing or appears to be urgent (especially when you feel unsafe), make your own feeling the most important part. Make sure that you feel safe, calm, and relaxed. Nothing makes love happen quite like safety and calmness. Seek out laughter, this is an act of self love. Laughter is the fuel for your soul, laughter makes you feel good. Laughter itself is love!
Forgive yourself for having made mistakes.
We all screw up sometimes. That’s called being human. Making mistakes is a requirement to join the League Of Normal Human Beings that we all belong to.
Realize that it’s okay to not be okay.
We are all stressed out cowards sometimes. everyone freaks out about some stupidly unique problem. Sometimes I feel like crying when I can’t find a sock that matches perfectly. It never makes any sense. You’re a complete weirdo who can’t handle simple tasks in life. But that’s okay, we all are. What do you expect? You’re a monkey and so am I.
Sometimes loving yourself means not doing things that you don’t want to do.
Allow your enjoyment of things to be more important than your so-called principles. For example, if you think that you have to get something done but you’re miserable doing it… then stop! This is an act of love. Procrastination is your best friend. Doing something from love is ALWAYS more productive than doing something that some other asshat wants you to do.
And dont forget… not spending time around people who make you feel bad about yourself–that is a great act of self love.
Ask others for physical touch when you want it.
You may ask for a hug, or a hand hold, letting others fulfill your wants and needs is still self love, because you are allowing yourself to feel that, enjoy that, and to ask for that. Allow yourself to be as you are and accept affection from others.
When you stop living life by other people’s values, beliefs desires, or priorities, and start living by your own, that is self love.
Anytime you meditate, any form of meditation, that is a form of self love
anytime that you stop an addiction, like smoking, that is an act of self love.
Honor yourself, because all of your happiness really comes from this self love.
